The HIPS Values-In-Action (VIA) Framework aims to support the school in developing students as compassionate and generous citizens with the will to act in improving the lives of others. Through the course of students’ six years at HIPS, we will equip them with the knowledge and skills to be Caring Contributors in society, grounded in the values of Sincerity and Charity. Students’ VIA experiences will leverage on the Character and Citizenship Education learning outcomes to ensure student-centricity, intentionality and coherence.

To design and facilitate meaningful, student-centered Values-in-Action experiences that intentionally develop values, knowledge, and skills to empower every student to be a Caring Contributor who contributes meaningfully to the school, community and nation.

VIA Framework

Department Approach

The HIPS Values-In-Action (VIA) Framework aims to support the school in developing students as Caring Contributors, with a will to act to improve the lives of others. The framework is anchored on the school’s Applied Learning Programme (ALP) Design Thinking Approach and progressively develops students across the 5 stages, Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test through a segmented approach.

From Primary 1 to Primary 3, students will focus on the first 3 stages:

• Empathy – Students will focus on understanding the needs of the selected target group.

• Define – Students will focus on defining the needs of the target group based on the insights gathered from the empathy stage and attempt to address these needs.

• Ideate – Students will work in teams to brainstorm and develop creative solutions to address the needs of the user.

From Primary 4 to Primary 6, students will focus on the last 2 stages:

• Prototype – Students will build representations of one or more of their proposed solutions.

• Test – Students will share, test and implement their proposed solutions, to the proposed target group, for feedback.

As students develop over their six years in primary school, their sphere of influence widens. In order to ensure VIA experiences are age appropriate, we start our lower primary students with service-learning initiatives which focus on the most immediate and fundamental domain of family, where children are able to “Live” out the values. With students expanding their influence at the middle primary level, service-learning initiatives will be designed to allow students to “Act” on the values in the next most immediate domain of the school. As students reach the pinnacle levels of development in upper primary, students will be given the opportunities to lead and “Pass” on the values through service-learning projects that impact the school and the community beyond.
